Test Code BBHOLD HOLD BBK TUBE 48 HRS/PREOP

Important Note

The collection of the sample must be collected by or witnessed by a member of the Laboratory Staff. Typenex procedure must be followed. See Blood Transfusion Services for additional information.

The tube will be Held for 48 hours and Blood Bank tests must be added within that time. This test is for Preoperative testing ONLY.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Pink top (EDTA) or Red Top

Also Acceptable: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 7 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 3.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Send specimen in original tube.

2. Proper PPI must be performed.

3. Specimen collection must be witnessed by Laboratory staff

4.  Specimen must be labeled with patient's name, DOB, date and time of collection

Reporting

Documentation of specimen collection, that the sample is acceptable, and that the band was applied is maintained in the patient report.

The sample is held 48 hours for possible orders. The reason it is held only 48 hours is because the antibody screen test must be completed within 48 hours of blood collection. If the patient band is removed, a new sample will need to be obtained.
