Test Code CBTYPE CORD BLOOD SCREEN (TYPE & DC)

Important Note

  • The nursing personnel in Obstetrics (if C-section, operating personnel) are responsible for collection and labeling of the cord blood samples collected in house.
  • Primary Caregivers are responsible for collection and labeling of Cord blood samples collected from home births.
  • The sample should be in an EDTA tube or a plain red top tube.
  • The tubes must be properly labeled with the Baby Name and Sex, Date of Collection, Mother’s Blood Type, Mother’s Full Name, and initials of person collecting the specimen. 

All cord bloods will be transported to the Laboratory in a BIOHAZARD bag.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Whole blood
Container/Tube: Lavender (EDTA) Preferred

Also Acceptable: Plain red top tube 

Specimen Volume: 1 full tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: 

1. Tube must at least 1/2 full.

2. Mix sample by inverting several times.

3. Send specimen in original tube, unspun, room temperature or refrigerated.
