Test Code SC SEMEN, POST VASECTOMY CHECK
Additional Codes
LAB218
Performing Laboratory
Porter Hospital Laboratory
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Semen
Container/Tube: Clean Container
Specimen Volume: Entire ejaculate
Collection Instructions:
The Sperm Screen is performed only on post-vasectomy patients.
• Each patient will bring a relatively fresh (within 1 hour) specimen with him, kept at body temperature if possible; or collect one in the hospital.
• The time of collection and the time it was received should be noted on the requisition.
• The only satisfactory way to obtain seminal fluid is to have the patient masturbate into a clean container or a hospital urine container. Interrupted coitus as a means of collecting the seminal fluid is unsatisfactory since the initial portion of the ejaculate, which may contain the highest density of sperm, may be lost.
