his test is subject to reflex testing, see Laboratory Reflex Testing Policy, you have the option to decline reflex testing if you believe it is not medically necessary. CDC guidelines state that Lyme Confirmation testing should only be ordered on specimens that are positive or equivocal by a FDA-licensed antibody screening test.  Samples with a result of positive or equivocal will reflex Lyme Ab Confirmation (CLIA) (CPT 86617 × 2).  In addition, if Anaplasma and Babesia Testing by PCR is positive for Babesia, the Parasite Exam, Blood (CPT 87207) will reflex.

Performing Laboratories

The Lyme Ab is performed at Porter Lab and relfexed to Mayo for Antibody Confirmations.

The Anaplasma and Babesia PCR is performed at UVMMC.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Blood
Container/Tube: Tiger top, serum gel AND Purple top (EDTA whole blood)
Specimen Volume: Full tubes:  4.0 mL serum and 3.0 mL whole blood
Specimen Minimum Volume: 2.0 mL serum / 2.0 mL whole blood
Collection Instructions:
1. Send specimens in original tubes.
2. If there is a delay in transport of >1 hour, centrifuge tiger top tube.
3. Centrifuged samples and whole blood are stable for 7 days at 2-8 °C
